Thank you Keith, for this Excellent list of helpful sites to creating and establishing the grounds for a character.
THE GENDER GENIE --- will tell you the gender of the author of any piece of writing,
based on the words they have used. obviously it's not 100% accurate but it's helpful
when you're trying to get the voice of a character right if you play the opposite gender.
DON'T EMASCULATE YOUR HERO --- the title says it all: how to make your character
manly. i personally think that this site gives a slightly stereotypical view of men in
some places but it's still very useful, particularly if you want to make an 'alpha
male' type of character. it is right about a lot of things, particularly speech imho.
GENDER DIFFERENCES WORKSHOP --- this is the best of all. it goes into all sorts
of things, including speech, behaviour, body language and even the brain. it
goes into behaviour for both guys and girls and you may even learn something
new about your own gender and how it affects your personal behaviour. interesting!
NAMING CHARACTERS
BABYNAMES.COM --- i love this site. it has millions of names with all their meanings,
and you can search by beginning letter, ending letter, gender, nationality/origin, meaning
or even the number of syllables! it has every name you could think of and then some.
FEMALE & MALE NAME RANDOMIZERS --- these only work if you have microsoft excel
but they're pretty amazing. it has thousands of first and last names and puts them
together to give you a new set of names. good when you're stuck for inspiration.
LISTS OF FIRST NAMES & LAST NAMES --- these work if you don't have excel.
PLOT PROMPTS ETC
PLOT IDEAS PAGE 1 & PAGE 2 --- this is actually intended for people writing novels but
many of these would work in roleplaying. they're not actual plots but prompts.
SETTINGS & PLOT ELEMENTS --- again, not intended for roleplaying, but can still be useful.
PHOTO PROMPTS --- some people are visual learners... some people are visual plotters.
refresh the page and this will give you loads of random photos which could spark ideas.
MORE PLOT PROMPTS --- again, for novels, but still good. some of them are funny too.
EVEN MORE PLOT PROMPTS! --- are you tired of these yet?
CHARACTER CREATION
PERSONALITY TRAITS --- if you ever have trouble thinking of a personality for your
character, then this site will be your new best friend. it's got 177 personality traits in a checklist.
TRAITS AND OCCUPATIONS --- you're supposed to use a dice for this but i never do.
CHARACTER PROMPTS --- this is useful in both creating characters and creating applications,
particularly interview apps. it has plenty of dropdown lists, including interesting questions that
are great for helping to develop your characters.
CHARACTER QUESTIONAIRE --- this too is very useful when creating characters/applications.
PERSONALITY QUIZ --- takes a while to fill out but it might be worth doing!
CHARACTER CHART --- i warn you, this is extremely detailed and takes forever to fill out.
however, it's worth it: if you can fill all this in, you obviously know your character better
than yourself! also useful in creating traditional applications.
MISTAKES TO AVOID
ABUSED CHARACTERS --- and why they usually suck balls. (but not always!)
CHARACTER FLAWS --- including what are & what aren't good ones to give.
A LOAD OF OTHER RANTS --- you never know, you might pick up some tips.
MARY SUE TYPES --- they may be more familiar than you'd think.
HOW TO MARY SUE --- you will need a computer and the ability to be obnoxious.
MARY SUE TESTS: #1, #2, #3 --- there are more, idk, pick a favourite.
OTHER STUFF
HEALTHY WEIGHT CALCULATOR --- so, you say mary sue is 5 foot 10 and 110lbs? really?
